Five questions. A more thoughtful way to read a health story.

Who was studied?
People, animals, or cells? Look at the participants’ ages and health circumstances before applying a finding to yourself.

What was compared?
In a randomized trial, chance assigns people to groups. In an observational study, researchers observe rather than assign the exposure. An observed link alone does not establish cause.

How big was the difference?
Ask for the numbers in both groups and the time period. A percentage without a starting point is hard to interpret.

What are the limits?
Look for harms, missing information, uncertainty, and who funded the work. A short study cannot settle every long-term question.

What is a useful next question?
Try: “Do the people in this study resemble me, and does this finding change anything about the plan we have already made?”

¿A quiénes estudiaron?
¿Personas, animales o células? Revisa las edades y circunstancias de salud antes de aplicar un hallazgo a tu vida.

¿Qué compararon?
En un ensayo aleatorizado, el azar asigna los grupos. En un estudio observacional, se observa en vez de asignar la exposición. Una asociación por sí sola no demuestra causalidad.

¿Qué tan grande fue la diferencia?
Pide los números de ambos grupos y el período de tiempo. Un porcentaje sin un punto de partida es difícil de interpretar.

¿Cuáles son los límites?
Busca riesgos, información faltante, incertidumbre y quién financió el trabajo. Un estudio corto no resuelve todas las preguntas a largo plazo.

¿Cuál es una buena siguiente pregunta?
Prueba: «¿Las personas de este estudio se parecen a mí, y este hallazgo cambia algo del plan que ya hicimos?»
